India defeated England by 100 runs in their 2023 ODI World Cup encounter in Lucknow on Sunday, thereby remaining unbeaten in the tournament after six matches.

The win also took the Men in Blue back to the top spot of the standings with 12 points, after having given it up briefly following South Africa’s win over Pakistan.

The win puts India firmly in the drivers’ seat to seal a semi-final spot, whereas for England, the chances of finishing in the top four remain very slim.

Rohit Sharma (87) and Suryakumar Yadav (49) led India to 229/9 after being put into bat. The hosts did not have the best of starts after they lost Shubman Gill (9), Virat Kohli (0) and Shreyas Iyer (4), but Rohit, KL Rahul (39) and SKY  led India’s recovery to help them post a respectable total.

While a target of 230 would not have seemed impossible, England struggled to get going against the India pacers.

Mohammed Shami (4/22) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/32) led the attack from the front, and the duo were ably supported by Kuldeep Yadav (2/24) and Ravindra Jadeja (1/16) as England crumbled to a total of 129. Liam Livingstone (27) was their top-scorer.
